Mealtimes and "Kaffe & Kuchen"

Typical German cake

Typical German cake

Dear friend of Language Success,

Are you already living in Germany for a long time or are you still trying to figure out how German eating habits are?

In this case, I have some German culture information for you to get along well and confident in Germany:
And by the way, you will refresh or expand your vocabulary.

Mealtimes:
Frühstück: depends on your work schedule and what time you leave your home. (Now, in Corona-times, what time you can manage to leave your bed.) Zwischen 6:00 und 8:30 Uhr
Mittagessen: 12:30 Uhr bis 14:00 Uhr
Nachmittagssnack alias Kaffee und Kuchen: 15:00 bis 17:00 Uhr
Abendessen: depends on the age, but usually zwischen 18:00 und 20:00 Uhr

The kitchen in restaurants closes usually at 10.00 PM. Sometimes even 9.30 PM, in cities sometimes at 11.00 PM. Spanish mealtimes are definitely difficult here.

People love it to have a coffee with maybe something sweet around 3.00 PM and we call this “Kaffee & Kuchen” and meet also friends and family to enjoy this together.
You might have already noticed, we have a very good bakery tradition here in Germany.

Now, autumn is coming and everyone is going crazy about “Zwetschgendatschi”. It is a traditional German cake with plums and it is recommended to eat that with cream.

Homework:

  1. Practice the pronunciation of “Zwetschgendatschi” (take care of the “Z” and “SCH”).

  2. Order one and try it.

  3. For beginners: How do you do that?
“Ich hätte gerne ein Stück Zwetschgendatschi (mit Sahne).“/
    „Einen Zwetschgendatschi (mit Sahne) bitte.“
    --> Advanced: "Mit Streusel."

Guten Appetit!

Vocabulary:

das Frühstück – the breakfast
das Mittagessen – the lunch
das Abendessen – the dinner
der Kaffee – the coffee
der Kuchen – the cake
die Sahne – the cream
die Streusel - crumble topping
Guten Appetit - Enjoy (your meal)
