Castles in and around Munich - Part II
Dear friends of Language Success,
Welcome to Part 2 of Castles in and around Munich! Take a day trip and enjoy the delicious coolness inside these beautiful castles.
Schloss Hohenschwangau is known as King Ludwig II’s „Kinderstube” and it served as the summer and hunting residence of King Maximilian II. It is situated approximately 1,5 kilometres from Schloss Neuschwanstein. You and your (German) friends can only visit the castle as part of a guided tour. We hope you are keeping fit as you’ll have to climb around 200 steps as part of the tour!
If this doesn’t tire you, you can visit the Schwanseepark. This beautiful park sits beneath the castle and comprises over 60 kilometres of hiking trails, surrounded by the Kalvarienberg and the Schwarzenberg.
Tip: You and your (German) friends should only take photos outside of the castle. Due to the large number of visitors and the sensitivity to light of the historical furnishings, indoor photography is not permitted.
Schloss Schleißheim and Schloss Lustheim in Oberschleißheim.
The founding of the Schleißheim palace complex goes back to Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria (lived 1548-1626). The ensemble of the New Palace, the Old Palace, the Lustheim Palace and the extensive baroque gardens impressively showcase court architecture and garden art from the 17th and 18th centuries. It simply is a sight to behold. Take a gondola ride on the central canal of the Hofgarten when you visit with your friends. Who needs to go to Venice!
Fun Fact: You can buy a variety of “Schnaps” and liquors here.
The Schleissheim distillery continues a long tradition. Until the 1920s there was a castle brewery in Schleissheim, where fruit was also distilled. This was once part of the Royal Bavarian State Estate of Schleissheim. In 1819/20, for example, in addition to "5170 buckets of winter and summer beer", "124 buckets of brandy" were also produced there!
Schloss Linderhof in Ettal.
Linderhof Palace and Park are one of the most diverse and artistic ensembles of the 19th century. It is located in the Graswang Valley, near the “Gemeinde” Ettal. The "Royal Villa" is the only palace that King Ludwig II of Bavaria was able to complete (1878). It has a French influence: the model is the small "pleasure palace", mostly located in a park, as it was built in France in the 18th century and was also often built in the parks of the large palaces in Germany.
The park of Linderhof Palace is one of the best of its era. It combines elements of the French baroque garden and the English landscape garden. A perfect place to cool off in this hot weather!
