Tips for Improving your German on Your Own

Of course, it depends on your level, but when you already have build a solid foundation (with us) …

  • Listen to German radio 20 minutes a day (try first to just understand the topic they are talking about - later on more details)

  • Learn every day 2-3 new words, write them down in your notebook and use them the during the next days

  • Pick a small book with a content you are really interested in

  • Set the language on your phone to German

  • Go through some German magazines and advertisments to see pictures related to the vocabulary (e.g. borchures of supermarkets are great! - Also for beginners!)

  • Try to watch German movies and series:

First set the audio to German and the subtitles to your mother tongue in a movie you already know. In this way you already know what it’s about and can understand the movie better.
Then, repeat the above for a movie you haven’t seen yet, and prior to viewing read in your language or German the description to get an understanding of what the movie is about.
Next, try to watch the movie without reading the description beforehand.
Pause the movie to read some subtitles and catch what it is about, but you DON’T have to understand 100%. Try to understand what’s going on in more general terms and then get more specific.
Advanced: Try to watch the movie or the series with audio and subtitles in German. You can read the description before and pause, if necessary to understand the content or specific jokes.
Very Advanced: Try to watch the movie without subtitles and tell a friend afterwards what it was about
Extremely Advanced: Try to watch or listen daily to some news in German, but take care that you are still sceptial about the content ;)

  • Buy some Easter or Christmas or Birthday cards and write Easter, Christmas, or Birthday wishes to your friends in German

  • Pick a German song you like, listen to it, read the lyrics, translate some key words you need for understanding and then sing the song as loud as you can
