German Christmas Tradition - Adventskalender

German language and culture

Der Adventskalender

Germany has a wonderful Christmas culture.

This year we experience it very limited, but I would like to tell you a little bit more about the German Christmas tradition. Each week in the advent-time, I’ll publish a new blogpost, where you can learn about the German Christmas culture and even improve your German language skills.

I would like to help you to understand the German language and culture and to feel comfortable with the language as well as the culture - yes, to enjoy it. In this way, you will not only broaden your horizon, but you will also find a true treasure.

First of all, I would like to introduce “Adventskalender”. Do you already know this tradition? Have you already opened your door today? “Hast du schon dein erstes Türchen geöffnet?”

From today, 1st December, we can open a “Türchen” at the “Adventskalender”, every day until Christmas. Behind it we find a beautiful Christmas picture that gets us in the mood for the coming celebration or delicious chocolate. Sometimes (especially as a child) we can open a little bag/present. Inside is a small gift, usually a little toy or pen and sweets. Every day, children are eagerly waiting to open their little door or package in the morning. On 6th December and 24th December, there is something bigger in it.

What that 6th December is all about, I’ll tell you next week.

Do you have an advent calendar or something that you do in advent-time in your country? Let us know in the comments!
