It’s hot in Munich! We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to swimming at a "Badesee" or along a "Fluss" in and around the city. Whether you’re diving into learning German, exploring German culture, or preparing for a German course, these spots are perfect opportunities to practice your “Deutschlernen” with friends. Grab your bike or train ticket, and check out our top 5 "Badeseen" plus a special biking tour along the "Fluss" Isar!
1. Riemer See, Messestadt Ost
Get there: U2
Fun Fact: This "See" was created for "die Bundesgartenschau" in 2005. The area was once Munich’s main airport, closed in 1992, later hosting concerts before becoming residential and a convention center. Spot the old airport tower or a sign for "Abflug". At 18 meters, it’s one of Munich’s deepest lakes. Constant groundwater makes it clean (and cold)! The east shore has a "Kiesstrand", a kiosk, and a wheelchair-friendly ramp. “Volleyball Felder” are behind the "Kiesstrand". Bring your "Sonnenschirm", as there’s little "Schatten"!
2. Feringasee, Unterföhring
Get there: S8
This massive "Badesee", spanning 32 hectares and 7 meters deep, offers tons to do. Cycle, jog, or play volleyball, soccer, or badminton. Surfing and fishing are permitted in some areas. The southeast has a "Liegewiese" for wheelchair users and people with disabilities. Big trees provide plenty of "Schatten" when it’s hot. There’s a "FKK" area for nude bathing – a slice of German culture!
3. Naturbad Maria Einsiedel, Thalkirchen
Get there: U3
Not directly a "See", but a "Naturbad" – a hidden gem! Tucked along the "Fluss" Isar among parks and trees, Maria Einsiedel is a chemical-free natural pool. Enjoy the 50-meter pool, linked to the non-swimmer area by a 6-meter-wide channel, or relax on the lawn under old trees. There’s a kids’ splash zone, playground, table tennis, floor chess, and a kiosk beer garden. Keep this secret spot hush-hush!
4. Langwieder See, Langwied
Get there: S2 to Lochhausen, then a 10-minute walk
A family-friendly "Badesee" with a shallow shore and large "Liegewiese", perfect for kids. There’s a kiosk, restrooms, and a barbecue area for picnics. A nearby climbing park adds adventure. Surrounding woods offer ample "Schatten". A great place to chat with German friends and boost your “Deutschlernen”!
5. Feldmochinger See, Feldmoching
Get there: S1 to Feldmoching, then a 15-minute walk or bus
This "Badesee" is a haven for peace-seekers. Its clear water and "Kiesstrand" invite swimming and sunbathing. Enjoy volleyball, table tennis, or grab a snack at the kiosk. There’s an "FKK" section for nude bathing. Meadows and trees provide plenty of "Schatten". A perfect spot to soak up German culture.
6. "Fluss" Isar: Biking and Swimming Tour
The "Fluss" Isar is Munich’s lifeline, perfect for combining swimming and a scenic bike tour. Start in the city center and cycle along the Isar-Radweg (Isar bike path), a well-marked trail stretching over 60 km. Stop at spots like the Flaucher, a popular “Kiesstrand” area with shallow waters ideal for wading or swimming. Pack a picnic, relax by the river, and enjoy the mix of urban and natural vibes. The route offers plenty of "Schatten" from trees and chances to practice your German with locals. A must for exploring German culture!
